Challenge

Patagonia is a family-owned apparel and outdoor sporting goods outfitter, rooted in sustainability. As a leader in eco-friendly business models, they’ve paved the way for others to reimagine their practices with sustainability in mind.

For Patagonia’s flagship experience, we were tasked with crafting a design solution that brought its massive product and content library to life in a simple yet insightful way. For a brand that truly lives it’s values, it was vital that the user experience echo that—meaning that our challenge was to create a digital shopping experience that tells a brand story at every touchpoint.

Approach

Being no stranger to storytelling, Patagonia has always maintained a strong voice. Our approach was to elevate this voice, and bring it to life in a clear, simple execution, while striking a balance between culture, business, and the environment. One that begs consumers to consider the impact of their choices—right down to the clothes they wear.

The reimagined eCommerce platform serves as a brand hub for both activism and content, through a cohesive digital style guide, UX principles, and a consistent narrative. The experience invokes human emotion and rational understanding, and is entirely driven by the brand’s mission. Most importantly, it serves both function and storytelling by not only selling clothes, but transforming value systems.

Strategy

Immersion & Synthesis

Folding bikes are luxury items, but competitors only focus on the specs and tech of their products. They’re missing out on one important aspect: the human element. People have been stuck at home for the last few years, and crave an escape from their indoor routine.

We knew we could differentiate Cowboy by answering the call to break free. Create irrational desire around the ebike lifestyle, and demonstrate to site visitors that Cowboy ebikes were the freedom machines they dreamed about.

Experience Design / “A Dare to break free”

We wanted to evoke the same level of freedom to explore that riders felt on the open road. So we crafted Cowboy’s new site in the brand’s spirit of unrestricted exploration.

User Experience

Embodying the ride through a seamless user journey.

We used animations and motion throughout the site to capture the intuitive connection between rider and ebike. Our goal was to get visitors into the mindset of what riding a Cowboy felt like via a seamless site experience, whether viewed on desktop or mobile.

Website Design

Building a world for every urban rider.

Each Cowboy ebike spoke to a specific person; we wanted to build the world of each audience into the site, inspiring visitors to envision which bike fit perfectly into their lifestyle.

3D Design

Exhibiting the folding bike beauty.

To emphasize the craftsmanship of the Cowboy, we enlisted First Things Studio, one of the best digital design and animation studios in the business, to create 3D models. The result was incredibly detailed product renders that showcased the ebike’s premium aesthetic, down to the handlebar texture.

Content

Creating moments to explore the finer details.

We designed interactive and editorial moments within the site for visitors to look deeper at Cowboy ebikes, giving them the power to view the beauty of the models at macro and micro levels.

Showcasing the intelligence of the companion app.

We highlighted the companion app through a series of previews that showed how the app was more than just a navigator for Cowboy riders; it was an intuitive connection between the rider and their ebike.

Simplifying checkout with built-in customization and configuration.

We built the configuration and customization of the ebike into one flow so customers can make it exactly as they envision in one seamless path.
